"It’s high time that we look differently at the behavior of people with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. A lot of this is still pigeonholed as problem behavior, but blaming the person concerned does not do justice to them or their actions. In fact, it is the opposite of what social welfare aims to achieve: it's about learning to take a closer look at people and understand what their behavior means.
This is also one of the central messages that we communicate to students on our social work course at Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, who will one day be working as support professionals for people with intellectual disabilities. In this respect, the WAVE project fits in seamlessly with our vision: it gives more room for intuition, doesn’t take established protocols for granted, and is open to insights from an entirely different angle. Outsiders’ perspectives can be very instructive."
